Contains examples of the types of documents officials in the Chinese Customs Service were likely to encounter: official forms, despatches, letters, petitions, treaties, rules, etc.
Copy owned by W. R. Clouth of the Customs Service in Shanghai c. 1907.'
Together with a third separate but uniformly bound volume also by Hirth: Wen-Chien Hsiao-Tzu-Tien: A Vocabulary of the Text Book of Documentary Chinese, 137 pp. Published Shanghai 1888. This work reproduces the second part (Part II) of the second volume of the main work. Here included as uniform in binding with the two main volumes and all three volumes obtained together.
Very rare. There is much rubbing to the leather part of the covers (testament to the work's usefulness?) and also to the spines with loss to the bottom of the spine of one volume and splits to the spines of the other two volumes. Inside generally clean. Priced accordingly.
