Rare account of travels in China's Shandong province at the end of the 19th century by a German following Germany's acquisition of the port of Kiautschou (more usually known as Kiaochow). Contains descriptions of travel throughout Shandong visiting both famous sites (Taishan and Qufu, home of Confucius) and little-known towns and places Contains ample illustrations, including black-and-white photographic illustrations (a good number of which full page) and engravings taken from photographs. Of particular note is a long folding engraved panorama of the bay and town of Kiautschou plus the surrounding area. There is also a folding colour map of the Kiautschou area plus a folding map of Schantung (Shandong) province. The facsimiles are of Chinese rubbings, plans, maps and documents. Includes a plan of the Confucius cemetery at Qufu which has a tear which intrudes onto the printed area. Otherwise a very good copy. Text in German.
