Harris, N. M. W: "SAMPAN PIDGIN". (Being a History of the Shanghai Rowing Club). Shanghai, 1938. vii, 188 pp. 54 b/w photographs and 2 maps. 23x16 cm. Cloth-covered boards.
"The book is a happy contribution to a social history of Shanghai; reviving as it does the spacious days whose passing the 'Old China Hand' laments". "The author's inspiration for his narrative and the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of the Shanghai Rowing Club have fittingly conspired to provide this History. Here are no dull pages...". A quintessential expatriate Shanghai piece with great photographs of the club's members and activities including one where 'Hula J. Huxley demonstrates a native dance to the great joy of onlookers'. There are also a couple of reproductions of drawings by "Sapajou" which originally featured in the North China Daily News. A very rare and irresistible find. The first time we have handled this work. Vertical split (6 cm) to the cloth cover of the spine where it meets the front cover underneath which can be seen the board. Otherwise fine.
