A thorough and most interesting study of Terrentius (1576-1630) a Jesuit who, after a long career in Europe, travelled to China in 1619 where he spent the final decade of his life, dying there in 1630. His prime achievements in China were the founding of Jesuit libraries and the dissemination of scientific knowledge from the West through publications and illustrated works, the most famous of which is the Yuan Xi Qiqi Tushuo (Illustrations and Descriptions of Marvellous Machines from the Far West).
