Discusses and illustrates art and archival documents related to the Qing dynasty Central Asian campaign (1755-1759) conducted by the Qianlong emperor.
The set of imperially-commissioned engravings 'Pingding Xiyu Zhan Tu' (Pacification of the Western Regions) is here reproduced in its entirety of 16 images along with reproduction of archival documents relating to the campaign and illustration of a group of poems composed and written in calligraphy by the Qianlong emperor describing the campaign and celebrating his victory.
The documents and engravings are held in the First Historical Archives of China in Beijing.
Particularly pleasing and useful are the images of the engravings which fold out to an image size of 26x45 cm to allow proper appreciation of these extraordinarily-detailed works.
