Chô-Yô: JAPANESE CHESS. The Science and Art of War or Struggle Philosophically Treated. Limited to 999 signed copies. New York, 1905. 242 pp. Portrait frontispiece, 2 double-page plates and numerous diagrams. 23x15 cm. Cloth (upper hinge just splitting, some blemishes).
A fascinating introduction to the subject, based on an analysis of the Siege of Port Arthur in terms of moves on a chess board. Alexander's siege of Tyre is similarly treated, and both chess parables are given as as compelling reasons for a wider understanding of the game. Somewhat loose in binding but generally good.
