Addiss, Stephen: 77 DANCES. Japanese Calligraphy by Poets, Monks and Scholars 1568-1868. 2006. xiv, 259 pp. Over 100 colour illustrations. Bibliography, index. 30x22 cm. Cloth.
Splendid, well-illustrated study of seventy-seven important calligraphic works from a period of remarkable flowering in Japan's highest visual art - with great spiritual, especially Zen Buddhist, resonance. This is, in fact, the first book in English to be devoted to Japanese calligraphy spanning the Momoyama and Edo periods. Recommended.
